May Open Show Winners
Best in show at our May Open show was Mr and Mrs Dembiniok's: TEMELORA SUNDANCER AT HOLLREXIA (bred by Mesdames: S. Morrell and T. Teague) shown here with the breed class judge: Mrs E Bartram. Mrs S. Obbard judged the Junior Handling and the Special Welfare classes. The show as usual attracted a very good entry. It was hoped to hold the show outdoors, however the weather was quite chilly and it was decided to run the show indoors. Brian and Pat Cox did good business on the club stall and the members were very generous as ever buying Raffle tickets (it is actually pointless trying to avoid Rodney; he can sniff out a non-ticket buyer at any distance). Janet and Ian Chandler were as ever, busy in the kitchen with their helpers producing the very varied menu, ensuring there was plenty of choice of meals and deserts. Members have been mentioning how nice it is to have free tea and coffee and squash available all day; this really goes a long way to ensure everyone has a happy and enjoyable show. Championship Show 2009 As mentioned in the previous news-sheet, plans for our first Championship Show are well under way. It will be held at Tidworth Leisure centre near Andover in Hampshire on the 2 nd August 2009. Several members have already asked to record their intent to donate a Shield, in either their kennel name or in memory of a special dog for this show. The plan is to order the shields en bloc to gain the best possible price and to maintain the continuity of the shields, which will be perpetual and will make a long lasting record for many years to come. If you would be interested in donating one of these shields, please contact the Hon. Secretary that he may put your request on the list. To make this show very special, donations of Prizes will be very welcomed as will any ideas you may have for the event. Thank you. |

Future Club Events The final event for this year will be the ever popular Christmas Party Match. Flyers will be sent out with the next news-sheet for you to reserve your place, we have to restrict this event to 70 places so please be sure to book early. Next year, in early May, we have challenged the South Wales Papillon Club to an inter-club Charity Challenge Match, to be held at Chieveley. The AGM will take place at 11 a.m. then there will be lunch on offer followed by the Match in the afternoon. The idea is for either dogs or clubs to be sponsored for the Match, the proceeds going to charities of the clubs choosing. It is hoped it will be light-hearted affair, with so many members being members of both clubs, it will be easy to create even teams. A sponsor form will be sent out at Christmas. We also plan to hold an Education Day next year in October, further details will follow in the next news-sheet. |

Sophie's Junior News Calling all Juniors – it's time to get back into your disciplines! You may or not know, there are many different disciplines that young people may participate in with their dogs. Being able to try many different disciplines is what keeps us interested and willing to enjoy these events. The Young Kennel Club (YKC) offers an extremely wide range of activities, in which only juniors aged between 8 and 25 may participate. These disciplines are: obedience, handling, stakes classed, agility, flyball, grooming and heelwork to music. Each of these disciplines is different and offers you different levels of competition with the exception of the handling and stakes classes. Try to take advantage of many competitions available to you along with the training days run by the Yong Kennel Club. By winning these competitions you can qualify for the semi-finals at Crufts and maybe even get into the main ring like juniors such as Emma McLaughlin who was awarded second place in the International Junior Handler of the Year Awards! If you do not wish to compete in the YKC competitions however, there are many other options available for you. Agility clubs such as UK Agility, offer information for agility competitions along with schedules available for people of any age. UK Show Handlers offers training days for both juniors and adults along with the chance to complete judging exams to put you onto the UK Show Handling Judging List. From personal experience I can say the training days are fantastic. All training is in depth by some of the previous top handlers too old to compete as juniors themselves and I would recommend taking up any chance of going on them. JHA stands for the Junior Handling Association. Many open shows and championship shows offer JHA handling classes, and it is in these classes where you can qualify for Richmond Junior Handling semi-finals by gaining a first to third place. So if you want to qualify for Richmond , then get entering the JHA classes! It was by winning the finals of this that Emma qualified for the International competition. Remember there are many disciplines available to juniors along with separate classes in order to split juniors and adults. Don't be put off trying a new discipline as you may find that you take to it and want to carry on to competition level. It is essential to keep both you and your dogs interested in whatever disciplines you are doing, if one stops enjoying it then so will the other. Enjoy your dogs and I wish all of you the best of luck! Sophie |
